even now, I still wonder. NH happens because of guilt trip as The Last showed it. Despite her confession he did remember, despite holding hands, despite the world being at peace, Naruto finally notices her because of a genjutsu telling him that she had been his stalker for years... yeah right. But SS? Why did sasuke marry her when he had never showed a romantic interest in her? I don't get it. Not to mention their relationship in gaiden looks kinda platonic from his side.

Both relationships are forced, that’s why they need a detailed explanation of how they even started to see each other in a romantic light. While all NH needed is few retcons and a dumb move to pull it off, SS is still a struggling in their to build itself for even Kishimoto himself couldn’t explain it. That’s how messed up it is.

Those couples weren’t planned, hence the poor writing. Had Kishimoto meant for them to happen by the end, I’m sure he’d have included a moment or two before the ending to prepare for it so it won’t sound forced when he makes them canon. He just never bothered to because, apparently, he didn’t really care about making couples canon or creating a new generation, that was all SJ/SP.

So in this arc the beginning of a beautiful and deep friendship was set up. I think Nami got a bit attached to Luffy here, without noticing.

Hi! First of all...I love your blog! You do such an amazing job getting your points across. I am a SNS and a SS shipper (probably the only one ever). I was just wondering...would there ever be a way for you to ship SS in canon? Like something in this next gen or a novel or whatever? Because personally, as much as I like SS, their canon sucks and I am in it simply for how the fandom portrays them. I'm hoping that something positive will happen in Boruto, but Kishi always lets me down.

Thank you. :) Eh, if Kishimoto would’ve developed their relationship properly from the start, then I’d probably support them. Other than that, I won’t ever ship them in canon. The novel and a series not written by Kishimoto are not enough for me. That’s the reason I couldn’t bring myself to enjoy SS in the first place. After they apparently became an item during the blank period, people justified the lack of positive development over the course of the story by saying that everything romantic between them happened post-war. It’s just lazy and bad writing on Kishimoto’s part. He always tells us the story; however, he has to show. This is an essential rule in writing—show, don’t tell. As for the fanon portrayal, I could eventually enjoy their relationship in a fanfiction.

He also says he doesn’t know how to write romance, but it is literally just a deep and unique bond. It doesn’t necessarily require on-stage kissing and confessing.

Could a NaruSaku fan enlighten me?

A lot of you say that Kishimoto threw character development out the window with the ending to Naruto, but because I don’t ship NaruSaku, I don’t see development being thrown away.
I mean, they all reached their goals…Naruto became Hokage, Team 7 reunited, Sasuke is rebuilding the Uchiha, Sakura and Hinata got the men of their dreams…

I would like to get a better understanding of why you think Kishimoto threw away development, with examples if possible?

Please and thank you.

I’ll try to answer as short as possible.
First of all, achieving superficial goals that characters stated at some point of their childhood is not necessarily a satisfying conclusion. The whole point of following the story is to see characters change and deepen their views, develop more intricate goals and aspirations.

Do you think that Sasuke fulfilled his role in the story when he killed Itachi - after all it was his original goal? No, killing Itachi was just a huge step in forming Sasuke’s political beliefs and worldview. Just like that Naruto in the later parts of the manga never stated that becoming Hokage was his ultimate goal, the word “Hokage” transformed into a label that described so much more - the power to protect and keep his friends together, the power to bring change into the system that led to so much hatred and tragedy, the power to fulfill his promise to villains whom he transformed, the power to bring Sasuke back and give him a home where he could live, etc. Some of these things were stated loudly in the manga, some required looking deeper than surface into Naruto’s character development.

So 1. Naruto. Naruto became Hokage without really achieving it. Originally Naruto was an underdog who had to fight against odds by being stubborn and working hard. It was later revealed that Naruto was a son of previous Hokage, a boy of prophecy, a reincarnation of the strongest ancestors, he had an unlimited power source in his belly, he learned from the strongest teachers from the start and had connections to each ruler of Konoha. His road to Hokage’s seat was paved with yellow stones. Yet, it could still be ok. It could be ok if Kishimoto showed us Naruto working hard to develop a new system of shinobi, working his ass off and struggling to find an answer that would lead the world into a new era. He could show Naruto searching for a compromise in cooperation with Sasuke that developed a darker ideology of equal importance. Instead Naruto just got the seat. He had no competition and no answers. He just continued to rule the same system his predecessors created. Just showing us that the world is somehow magically in peace under the same circumstances is not enough to make this kind of resolution viable. Also, the world is not changed if there is another Uchiha villain that wants to kill everyone just like the former villains did. Also we don’t see Hokage Naruto do any admirable work - why should we celebrate the main hero becoming a nominee ruler in the world that doesn’t even need ninjas anymore most of the time? We don’t see him protecting his friends due to being Hokage, we see him drinking and eating instant ramen. He couldn’t even create a world where Sasuke would feel comfortable living in Konoha. Development my ass.

2. Sasuke. Sasuke represented change. He represented the need to change, the driving force of change. He was the force that could not be stopped and driven into submission, because Sasuke directly saw the darker side of Konoha and thus he was restless to see ninja world change and he could never live in the world that destroyed everything he loved. Sasuke’s goal after Itachi’s death was to see change, not have a happy family, rebuild his clan or work for the system that mutilated him. Instead he was castrated, beaten into submission, brainwashed and sent to a redemption journey that apparently had to fill the void in his soul after his essence was ripped out. Sasuke became a broken shell of a man - satisfied?

3. Team 7 reunited is bullshit. Unless people’s equivalent of being reunited is being once in a scene together without trying to kill each other. That is what we’ve got - Sasuke stating that Team 7 meant something to him, him having little interaction with Naruto and Sakura and abruptly leaving to almost never return. Apparently that was the moment when Naruto and Sakura lost all connection as well. After all the hype about Team 7 it almost looked like a confession that Team 7′s bond was a hoax. In my head reunited Team 7 would mean them working together again, becoming close friends and family. The only way I could see that was them going on a journey together to figure out answers. Sasuke could never live in the old Konoha and both Naruto and Sakura would not only want to be with him, they would want to broaden their world view as well to become future leaders. What we have now doesn’t bring any kind of emotional satisfaction since there is no exceptional bond, there is hardly any bond at all.

4. Sakura. It was easy to see that the better version of Sakura really wanted to become stronger as a kunoichi and as a person. When Sasuke was not in the picture her aspirations actually broadened. Almost everyone hated Sakura’s original characterisation as a shallow bitchy weak girl and we wanted her stronger Part 2 self to fight on par with Naruto and Sasuke. (I had a feeling that Sakura hated her weak self even more than we did.) We wanted her to help Naruto save Sasuke from the darkness as she promised. In the end all Sakura did for Sasuke is cry and beg which had 0 results, and we have every reason to believe that she gave up on her kunoichi aspirations the moment Sasuke returned. The last image of her in original manga was in apron dusting shelves. She never reached Tsunade’s level, she never became a leader, she never even got the status of Legend for defeating Kaguya. I won’t even go into Gaiden where it was stated that SS broke her as a woman. You could say that being useful in the war and having Sasuke back was enough. But even if she got Sasuke, what about her view of herself? How is it satisfying for the readers who were led to believe that Sakura will eventually be equal to Naruto and Sasuke and surprass Tsunade? All those loud words were for nothing.

5. Hinata. While Part 2 Hinata definitely got what she wanted, Part 2 Hinata was a shell of the character a lot of us loved in Part 1. Yet, since she had a very tiny amount of panels, it was never really obvious that she aspired no more. We only saw her lusting for Naruto, but a lot of us assumed that her earlier ambitions were still there. We interpreted some of her words as her wanting to move on and stand on her own. As I said, goals tend to change, but usually in stories they develop into something deeper, not regress into a shallow obsession. We were in for a surprise. Still, I repeat, we could be happy for Part 2 Hinata getting all she wanted in life - Naruto’s D. But the way she did this was atrocious. She never managed to reach Naruto’s heart herself - she gave up over and over and over again. She was denied development even in her love life as she never managed to get over her insecurities to tell Naruto how she felt face to face. In the end deus ex machina did all the work for her. At the same time Naruto’s character was mortally damaged by retcons that made him into an emotional impotent and a scumbag. If I have to be happy for Hinata sitting on Naruto’s D, I am happy. But I think I was supposed to be happy for Hinata who reached Naruto and won his heart by overcoming her fears and growing as a person. In the end she is just a stagnating housewife. Bravo. Oh, also she did nothing about her clan and all her power-ups came from the thin air.

6. Final part - the ninja world and the rest of the cast. Are we supposed to be happy seeing that the peace that somehow magically fell on earth also destroyed all aspirations and life-purposes of our favorite characters? They all just wander around trying to lead normal non-ninja lives in the world that doesn’t need them anymore. Brilliant. We see them grouch as their children refuse to learn their old techniques. We see our favorite aspiring strong ninjas reduced to being unhappy parents. Was Choji’s, Ino’s, Sai’s, Lee’s, Temari’s ultimate goal to settle with children? Was Shino’s ultimate goal to teach in the academy as a low-class chunin? I won’t continue. Everything these people ever stated about themselves went into the window.

I won’t even bother, though I’ve said like 10% of what I could say.

Naruto’s ending destroyed all development, all major themes of the story and all purpose of Naruto’s journey.

In a battle between Hinata and Sakura (un bias) who do you think will win, some say Hinata because she's a Hyuga elite ? I think Hinata will try her hardest but doesn't the manga databook say Sakura hates losing like Naruto and Kushina? I doubt Sakura will loose, I don't like Hinata, but that doesn't mean she'll put a decent fight. Might Guy is powerful yet human non elite ninja, some Hinata/NH fan said Sakura will loose since her and Rock Lee are the weakest lmao. ;( Yet Madara got .. Might GuY

Hinata, a Hyuga elite? Please. Where do people get these ideas from? If she’s a Hyuga elite then why did she never win a fight? And why did she become a housewife instead of taking responsibility of her clan? That’s right. Because she can’t.

Sakura might be a housewife as well, but we’ve seen what she is able to do even past the age of 30+ with limited training:

Their ninjutsu skills, intelligence, speed and stamina are quite similar. However, Sakura is much stronger, her hand seal techniques are better and her knowledge on genjutsu is better. The only thing which Hinata is slightly better at is taijutsu. I believe they’re at a similar level but Sakura would most definitely win.

I’m gathering all of the Luffy and Nami interactions trough out the manga to try and see how their relationship changed and…well…. because i Love them both hahaha. This is part 1

1) First meeting. Luffy falls out of the sky and Nami immediately takes a chance to pretend she Knows him.

2) Nami is impressed by his strenght

3) Introduction time. Luffy refuses to join her, but she doesn’t want to let him go that easy.

4) Nami wonders what’s in his hat that’s so precious (looks like she is the girl who only values jewels and money.)

5) Luffy gets on her nerves, lol

6) But she still reveals him her goal

6) After she finds out he’s a pirate…

7) She gets visibly upset and disappointed

8) Then Luffy tells her about his hat. Nami seems to understand, but can’t get past the fact that he’s a pirate, for obvious reasons.

9) She shouts out her preferences to him. lmao.

10) Then she decides to use him.

11) She ties him up and presents him to Buggy. Luffy is not amused.

12) He decides to Not let her be part of his crew.

So basically, their relationship did Not start on very good terms. Let’s see where it goes from here. :)

How do you feel about the "she/he never doubted him/her" trope in shonen? personally I used to like it until certain shippers started saying that's the all it takes for a pairing to be good not to say unwavering faith isn't a plus but still not everyone has that(at the start at least) and it's not the end of their relationship that's one of my biggest peeves when it comes to nh tbh but how do you feel about it in general lol?

This trope is popular because a lot of men apparently feel aggrieved that the people around them don’t believe in them, people don’t have faith in them being capable of great things. That’s why we often have wankfest where both love interest and nakama taking turn to declare their faith in and loyalty to the MC.

I hate this trope myself. It feels to me it’s another example of people putting the burden of their own issues onto their romantic partner. They’re like “I have self doubt, it’s my romantic partner’s job to say they believe in me whenever I need to hear it”. I think it’s unhealthy, don’t pine for someone to fix your issues and validate you, get your own shits together yourself.

A lot of people think the meaning of a romantic relationship is getting the emotional support and fulfilment they need but denied in their other relationships such as family and friends, it’s a toxic mentality, you’d just end up being very needy, dependent and selfish.

This is a line that Karin says, in Gaiden and I constantly see SS shippers use.

Please show me where the fuck Sasuke seems happy to be married to Sakura. The fact that he called her his wife does not count, that’s not a term of endearment and he’s never even there to be a husband.

Won’t kiss her, hug her, say he loves her, or bless her with that oh-so-romantic forehead poke. He looks dead inside, when he’s with her. I’m not seeing the fondness of even close friends, nothing.

His reaction to her being sucked into another dimension by the enemy is weak and yet, he still freaks out over Naruto getting hurt.

He doesn’t look happy during what are supposed to be loving moments.

He literally looked happier on his fucking deathbed.

Sasuke’s “relationship” with Sakura does not make him happy. Please, pull your head out of your ass and see what’s so blatantly obvious.

SS people are trying so hard to read between canon lines that they create a whole new AU with different characters and events. I guess if you stick your head far enough up your own ass, you will eventually reach Narnia.

Sakura rejection towards lee = Sakura being in love with someone else/not interested = acceptable
but
Sasuke rejection = not interested/being in love with someone else? = unacceptable ?

Sakura is clearly not interested in Lee, which she rejects and that’s fine. Even she rejects Naruto’s crush on her because she doesn’t see him in a romantic way and that’s fine.
But Sasuke’s rejections, which were led by a ‘thank you’ and his reasons for doing so, he is still labeled as a bad person.
Both deserve to reject as much as the other. Both deserve to choose who to love or to not love at all.
Yet all I see is Sakura getting away by doing the exact same thing Sasuke is doing to her.

Seriously, I might hate SS and ship him more in crackships bc SS had a canon chance and it was puke-worth shitty, but I think sasuke is generally speaking, unshippable, bc he's so asexual you can't ship him without OOCness. He's capable of great love but man, he's never showed interest in intimacy. Naruto did. Him? Barely better than Sai. Up until now I wonder how SS became a thing. I mean even Kishi can’t explain the transition. What happened? Did sakura grow some balls like Karin (she can’t even kiss him, lol)? Did sasuke initiate it (I’m not sure he knew how to make babies before the honey moon)? Have we been in a genjutsu all this time? Let’s say sasuke just needed the spark. However, sasuke is someone with whom one has to initiate things or it won’t work! So how spineless sakura managed to make him?? [2/3]
Even then. Under normal circomstances sasuke had never showed interest. Ino is hot, sakura is cute… naruto is cute. Yet, nothing. Let say he’d the kind who consider sex with ppl he’s emotionally connected to. STILL, he never gets physical/sexual/cuddles with neither from above. How can you NOT summon OOC to put him in a relation? The moment he wants a kiss, he becomes OOC. He’s just like picolo IMHO.

I don’t think Sasuke doesn’t have the knowledge to do it or that he feels nothing, I think he’s just not interested. Like, I don’t think he’d need guidance or a walk through to be or sleep with someone, I think he’s just too busy-minded to even consider the thought of it. His mind is just too occupied with other stuff that doesn’t include romance, sex, or making babies. It’s just not in his wish or to-do lists. It’s something he has -and evidently showed- zero interest in. I believe this zero interest he keeps giving is a choice, his choice. It doesn’t mean he needs help or guidance like Sai, it means he’s not interested. Period.

Kishimoto couldn’t explain SS because SS requires putting Sasuke in certain circumstances that would eventually force him to think about marrying Sakura of all people. He’ll have to force Sasuke to think about settling down in Konoha of all places -the very place he refused to stay in- then force him to think that it’s totally fine to marry someone he won’t be there for to play the game of love with and that it’s fine to become an absent father in the future -Totally OOC- and lastly, he’ll have to actually make Sasuke think of getting married in the first place and create babies, which -knowing Sasuke- isn’t easy to do. Kishimoto is gonna need some work there to make SS happen since the chance of it going canon was zero thanks to the kind of development he gave it and honestly, I don’t think he’s up or it. I don’t think he even meant to make SS a thing, it’s just part of the BS project he allowed to happen.

(I still wonder if there is a plot twist coming up in regards to Sarada’s origin anyway. Leaving SS as indefinite as it is leaves room for such plot twist to take place in the future).

I think that bit Kishimoto said about Sasuke and the juice or tea applies to SS perfectly. The plot can’t move from there without a Sarada, and to make a Sarada, Sasuke has to marry someone, otherwise, Sarada won’t exists and Boruto won’t have his female!Sasuke around. That’s why SS supposedly happened, to make BS a thing. The lake of explanation tho still leaves it open for interpretation. I think that was intentional.

Back to the point, True, Sasuke never showed interest in intimacy but I don’t think it’s because he couldn’t, I think it’s because he had no interest whatsoever. It’s just not his thing. It isn’t what he wants, it never was.

Since he was a little child, Sasuke's dream was all about reaching greater heights and devoting himself for the greater good. I’m pretty sure settling down and becoming a family guy was never something he wanted or wished for, he’s all about self-sacrificing, which means, no family and no obligations.

The thing is, Sasuke knew what his life would be like since 698/699 so making him marry someone from Konoha and have a kid with them was totally OOC since he knew better than to let it happen. If he’s getting married, then he’ll at least choose someone who could travel with him rather than someone he won’t be there for, don’t you think? It’s just too OC, hence, the lake of explanation.

and then I realized, Naruto finds no joy in having kids because he already did the kid raising thing partially with Konohamaru

I hadn’t really thought about it but you’re totally right, from what we’ve seen on paper Naruto has invested more of his time into raising Konohamaru and teaching him things than he has Boruto. Boruto doesn’t know anything about Naruto, nothing about Kurama or the fact that Naruto has literally limitless chakra. He likely doesn’t even know about sexy jutsu. Sasuke was the one who taught him Rasengan when Naruto taught Konohamaru when he was younger than Boruto. It’s not beyond Naruto’s abilities to teach kids how to use Rasengan, but he still never took the time out of his day to teach Boruto despite him probably not being Hokage until after Boruto was older than Konohamaru was when he learned it.

Thinking about Konohamaru really puts the Naruto/Boruto relationship in a slightly different perspective tbh. It makes me realize there are even more layers to how few shits Naruto’s given about his kids up to the point of the Boruto movie/manga (or at least Boruto, Himawari is still barely relevant even as of the end of the movie). And clearly it’s not because he’s just inept at it, cause he did a fairly good job with Konohamaru, it’s because his heart just wasn’t in it and he didn’t care enough. And when Naruto’s so eager to drop his Hokage duties to go run off with Sasuke (not once, but twice in Gaiden alone) it’s clear that his Hokage duties won’t stop him from doing things that are actually important to him. His kids just don’t rank that high in his list of priorities which seems to be:

Family?
